Half vs Full Baths

When homebuyers explore potential properties, they often filter listings by price and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms to find homes that suit all of their needs. While these categories may seem straightforward, you will encounter listings that include full, half, or even three-quarter baths. Understanding each of these bathroom styles will help you narrow down your search. It is also helpful if you are listing your house for sale because remodeling one type of bathroom into another can increase your home value.

This blog will guide you through the differences between half vs full baths, as well as a three-quarter bath.

Full Bath

A bathroom is categorized by what is inside it rather than the size of the room. A bathroom must have four elements to qualify as a full bath: a sink, shower, bathtub, and toilet. It’s possible to have more than one of these elements, such as two sinks or a toilet and a bidet, but anything less than that is not officially considered a full bathroom. The space can still be listed as a full bath if there is a shower-tub combination.

Bathrooms off of the master bedroom are the most common location for a full bath. They are the most desired bathrooms on the market because they offer everything needed to practice good hygiene. In addition, this type of bathroom is likely to be larger to accommodate the four or more elements, increasing the value of your home.

Three-Quarter Bath

Each element in a bathroom is considered one-quarter of the room, so removing one turns the space into a three-quarter bath. The most common configuration for this type of bathroom is a sink, toilet, and stand-up shower without a tub. In older homes, however, a bathtub commonly replaces the shower as the third fixture.

A three-quarter bathroom is typically slightly smaller than a full bath but still just as functional if well-organized. It is the standard style for a spare bathroom. Its main advantage is having all the necessary bath elements while simultaneously saving space. If you do wish to turn it into a full bath, though, upgrading a three-quarter bath in an older home is easy and inexpensive. Simply install a shower head over the tub and enclose it with a shower curtain.

Half Bath

A half bath, also known as a powder room or guest bathroom, is a small bathroom that includes just two of the four elements of a full bath. In most cases, this is a toilet and a sink. You can generally find a half bath on a home’s main floor for guests to use when they visit.

Adding a half bath to your home is one of the most profitable home improvement projects. It can increase your home value by up to $50,000, depending on the room size.
